Manipur journalists, who have been on strike since December 29 demanding the release of A. Mobi Singh, editor of Sanaleibak daily, have decided on an alternative strategy to press the demand.

They will return to work on Wednesday, January 5, making it possible for the daily newspapers to resume publication effective from Thursday, January 6. The newspapers will not carry any news relating to the state’s ruling parties, the Congress and the Communist Party of India, the ministers and the MLAs belonging to these parties.

The new strategy, involving boycott of the ruling parties, was decided upon a meeting held at Imphal on Sunday, according to The Telegraph of Kolkata.

A team of police commandos had arrested Mobi Singh, who is vice-president of the All Manipur Working Journalists Union, outside his office on December 29 on charges of him being a member of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (Tabungba) group. He was produced before a court, which remanded him in police custody till January 5.

Senior journalists at Sunday’s meeting characterized Mobi’s arrest as part of vendetta against the Manipur media for complaining to Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram about their conduct during his recent visit to the state.

A delegation comprising senior editors had met Chidambaram at the Raj Bhavan and complained of frequent harassment of media persons by the state police. It also told him about frequent threats and intimidation by militant groups.

It is out of common sense why congress party and communist party of India are against the Manipur media while these parties are declaring themselves to be the strictly committed to the Indian Constitution which provides the every citizen of India with freedom of expression. Journalists are right in their way of boycotting to these parties.Every Citizen of India must be with them.I heartily greet them.Democratic governments have no constitutional power to curb the fundamental rights of their citizens.PM Dr.Manmohansingh and congress supremo Mrs. Sonia Gandhi with their CPI colleagues must look in to the matter soon.Prof.Mansu Masram Betul M.P.
